NONNA OPS! How Italy Accidentally Raised The Elusive Author

πŸ–‹οΈ Letter from the Editor

As published in The Daily Tremor, Vol. XVIX

Dearest Gentle Reader,

Something both interesting and deliciously confidential has just passed my desk.

Via sources both scandalous and impeccably scented:

Our Elusive Author’s early adult years were not exclusively spent marauding in the wild.

Before she became the notorious neuronic maestro of mischief we’ve so shamelessly grown to love, she was…

…well, shall we say, culturally domesticated by …

Italians.

Sì… you’d do well to brace your biscotti.

I, yourΒ Editor-in-Chief, has uncovered a guarded secret about our Elusive Author’sΒ flagrantly insubordinate origin story.

How, you ask? Funny you should.

Grip your espresso:

Undercover agents have been lurking in the hedges (for research purposes, naturally).

Bearing witness to scenes most curious.

Through windows flung wide, they glimpsed the truth: that in these kitchens, with beloved nonnas clustered around a fragrant cauldron, our Elusive Author first honed both a talent for stealthy espionage and the darker arts of secret sugo-saucery.

Lean in…

For almost a lifetime, our Elusive Author moved among β€œle mie famiglione italiane adottive, sempre allegre e rumorose” – adoptive Italian families whose open windows lured with intoxicating aromas of basil and rebellion, until she could not help but melt into them, like limoncello gelato on a hot summer’s day.

Our analysts concur: this is where our Elusive Author was, in fact, inducted.

Taught that shouting with her whole chest was permitted.

Taught to gesture wildly while making entirely reasonable points.

Immersed in the ancient Mediterranean art of cooking as emotional warfare – where a properly made sugo can reduce grown adults to tears and settle family disputes that reason never could.

Schooled by those beautiful, boisterous and supremely talented bunch, how to shape emotional chaos into meaning.

Whistleblowers report she took notes. And a few secret recipes.

But, as with all grand romances, somewhere between passion and geographical inconvenience, tragedy can strike. And did.

Not through betrayal, mind you. Nothing so vulgar.

No, more like a Greek plate thrown with joyous abandon.

Then discarded.

Beautiful gesture, wrong foundation.

Her table disbanded.

The nonnas she loved, left.

And yetβ€”

Our Elusive Author kept the receipts:

Proof of the quiet catastrophe of learning that sometimes adoption is too frail a bond.

So, she picked herself up, stitched all she’d learned into the hem of her heart – the shouting, the cooking, the refusal to live quietly – and built her own table.

Neurospicy or not, she had little choice but to become the very nonna she needed.

The Avian Intelligence Unit (AIU) convened a press conference – aptly delivered at Saint Mark’s Square, Venice.

PERCY confirmed that, after vanishing for nearly seven days, location unknown, our Elusive Author has been spotted. By cocksure pigeon paparazzi.

“She was last seen standing at her stove, weeping into her sugo, singing off-key. Whether from onions, grief, or joy remains under investigation. Prosecco may or may not have been involved. No further questions at this time.”

Eyewitnesses also commented that the pigeons refused to leave after the press conference.

One can only wonder: What are they up to this time?

As I always say…never, ever under-estimate pigeons.

Be that as it may, sources unanimously confirm:

– Our Elusive Author still cooks, with passion

– She still shouts expletives whenever it suits her

MΓ₯neskin still plays at dangerous volumes during meal preparation

The question remaining on everybody’s lips, dearest gentle reader, is this:

What does she mourn?Β

The loss of her pseudo-family?

Her home?

Or simply that she had to leave tables that once fed her heart, while killing her soul. Even when the food was perfect.

Or perhaps she mourns that the universe doesn’t explain why love is insufficient to override incompatibility.

Either way, do take note: When you find yourself walking The Neurospicy Route, sometimes the people who showed you how to live, simply cannot stay to watch you do it.

For now, know the Elusive Author is safe and has been spotted near an espresso machine in Positano.

With a Pavarotti playlist. La donna Γ¨ mobile, is something our Elusive AuthorΒ is not.

More on these and other scandalous escapades later.

Until our next dispatch, breathe deeply.

And, whatever you do, let your nonna know that you love her.

If you do not have a nonna, you can get a taste of it HERE.

PS: Operative Mac was spotted kite surfing during the Elusive Author’s MIA. One can’t help but wonder what he’ll get up to next!Β  And whether Percy is behind his newfound passion for flying.

Rest assured, we’ll get to the bottom of it.

Further footage has emerged of Operative Mac in his long-anticipated Ferrari acquisition, executing high-speed manoeuvres through Rome.

PERCY maintained aerial oversight. Peregrine precision, as expected.

For clarity, this refers to Miss Peregrine, Alma LeFay Peregrine, known to shapeshift into a peregrine falcon. She has been sighted, intermittently, flying with Granny Weatherwax, the esteemed Discworld’s revered headologist.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the pair undertake freelance work for the Avian Intelligence Unit.

We report, not conjecture. Assumptions, wise gentle reader, are yours to keep:

Not yet a victory lap. More as it comes in.
