DOPAMINE HITS! The Opium‑High of our Age

πŸ–‹οΈ Letter from the Editor

As published in The Daily Tremor Β |Β  XXIII β€’ III β€’ MMXXVI

Dearest Gentle Reader,

This week’s dispatch arrived with all the decorum of a laudanum stupor.

Distorted enough to pass for illusion, were truth not so inconveniently attached.

Delivered by the Gulls.

Their report was reviewed, as protocol demands, by the Avian Intelligence Unit and Ms Prudence Spank-Bottom ESQ, head of Fairness and Fortitude and the unrepentant friend of the neurospicy.

PERCY declined comment.

Prudence did not.

Her issued statement ensued, naturally:

❖ ❖ ❖

The Neuroverse has recently observed a large-scale microchip re-appropriation.

Redirected.
Reassigned.
Redeployed in service of matters more military.
Considerably more water-hungry than a Peace Lily in summer, or a Warship rehearsing for Peace.

Microchip re-appropriation coincided with a steep decline in AI assistant performance and escalating rehearsals for peace.

The floating peace convention concluded its premier event.

A warship was blown to smithereens at the closing banquet celebration.

Some press filed it under humanitarian service.

But Singapore stopped singing.

And so did the Neuroverse.

Meanwhile, stressed humans were distracted by the fact that their weakened AI was affecting their performance, terrified of what they might hear if they dared to let themselves think again.

❖ ❖ ❖

So, alas, Dune’s Arrakis is not the only planet in the news this week.

The Neuroverse notes that events feel like a nervous system asked to perform wellness in a world rehearsing catastrophe and calling it policy.

Like FND, waiting in the wings.

Keeping humanity burnt out is political strategy: how politicians and monarchs slip atrocities past people: they create fear about the rise in scamming, then downplay human trafficking making profitable scale possible.

We call it being Lewinsky’d.

But the next front page of The Daily Tremor will concern itself with the galactic redecoration project trend. Brace accordingly.

❖ ❖ ❖

Prudence Spank-Bottom ESQ concluded coolly:

“Same nonsense, different epoch. An eternity of chaps fighting over whose is bigger. And still no one has thought to ask: bigger than what, exactly, and to what end?”

She set the report down. She did not clap.

❖ ❖ ❖

This is why, despite stock market fluctuations, the Neuroverse proceeded with its 151st Walk of Fame Awards.

We celebrate kindness.

Never nice. Nice is performance. Curated. Careful. Palatable. Nice makes people comfortable. Nice does not challenge, push back, or hold a line.

Kind is real. Kind stays in the room even when it is hard. Kind says no when no is the honest thing. Kind does not flatter. Kind does not perform. Kind does not make itself small to be liked.

People who need nice will find kind threatening.

Because kind will not lie to them.

And they sense that, even if they cannot name it.

Yes, nice will find this challenging. There is a powder room, down the hall, to the left.

❖ ❖ ❖

So, our Walk of Fame glints quietly underfoot on our High Street.

The stars were not placed there simply for talent.
Or wealth.
Or beauty.

Recipients just know.

Because this kind of award is tucked into the folds of your soul.

❖ ❖ ❖

Until the next tremor reaches the page,
keep your kindness in a flavour-saver of your own making.
It is one of the rarest commodities.

The flow has changed direction.
