The Editor
in Chief
She does not predict. She does not feel. She publishes. Her sources are protected. Her positions are not negotiable.
The Editor in Chief runs The Daily Tremor. The Neuroverse's operatives report up to her desk. Percy Pilsbury passes surveillance. Lady Hilary F. Had-Enough passes readings. Ms Prudence Spank-Bottom ESQ passes legal positions. Agent Mango passes translations. Ophelia Fae contributes when she chooses. Bud, the Gulls, the Pigeons, the Parisienne Pigeon Party: all of it filters up. She synthesises. She decides what gets published, what gets filtered, and what gets leaked. Her sources are seldom named. The masthead has had her for as long as the Neuroverse has existed.
She does not get emotionally involved. This is not because she does not feel, and it is not a comment on those who do. The masthead is full of operatives who feel deeply and file accordingly. The Editor's particular function is different. She is the one who holds the distance the publication requires to do its work. Someone has to stand back from the room in order to see what shape it is. She has chosen to be that person. The Tremor exists because she is willing to.
Her remit is the Neuroverse. She also reports on matters from Earth when necessary. She has indicated that she will, regrettably, extend coverage to Mars if Elon insists. She does not consider this an aspiration. She considers it a likely future inconvenience.
Distance is her instrument. Not her wound.
"Truth isn't polite. It's plain and profound. The Tremor publishes both halves of that sentence. Without apology. Without emotional involvement. With sources protected."
The Editor in Chief · Masthead Note · The Daily Tremor
The Daily Tremor headquarters. Percy Pilsbury surveils from the roof. The Editor in Chief works from her office inside. The arrangement is mutually understood. Neither party requires confirmation of the other's position.
The Editor in Chief works from her office at The Daily Tremor HQ. There is no ballroom. There is no high-end bunker. There is a desk, a door that closes, and an editorial calendar. The office is functional in a way that has been mistaken for unambitious. The error is the reader's. The Tremor has never run late.
She redecorates the Neuroverse, not her office. The distinction is editorial.
The Editor in Chief chairs the Neuroverse Redecoration Sub-Committee. The committee's remit is the visual, structural, and tonal coherence of the Neuroverse. Walls are repainted. Pages are re-laid. Old assumptions are stripped to the studs and replaced with materials that match the building's actual purpose.
Sitting members include Nigella Pawson, Ms Prudence Spank-Bottom ESQ (Ms Pawson's zygotic twin), and a Yorkshire Terrier of unverified credentials who takes the minutes. The minutes are excellent. The Yorkie is on the masthead.
The committee meets when the Editor calls it. The Editor calls it when the room requires attention. She has never been wrong.
The Sub-Committee in session. The Editor presides. Ms Pawson contributes. Ms Spank-Bottom interjects. The Yorkshire Terrier records every word. The Neuroverse benefits.
The Neuroverse Walk of Fame. Opens annually in March. The Editor in Chief cuts the ribbon. She does this herself. She has not delegated it. She does not intend to.
The Editor in Chief cuts the red ribbon at the opening of the Neuroverse Walk of Fame Awards each March. The ribbon-cutting is one of the very few public-facing functions she performs in person. It is also one of the few occasions on which the masthead crosses out from behind the byline and into the room.
She wears the velvet. She wears the pearls. She wears the dark glasses. She does not give a speech. She cuts the ribbon. She leaves before the photographs.
The Editor in Chief reports on Earth when the situation requires it. She has not asked for the assignment. The situation has not consulted her. She covers it anyway, on the grounds that the absurdities originating on Earth are now affecting her Neuroverse, and the Tremor's readers are entitled to the analysis.
The Earth Desk is, to her, less a beat than an ongoing editorial inconvenience. She has filed dispatches on cosmic wealth, hostile architectural ambition, and the rebranding of cruelty as efficiency. The Tremor is the only paper currently treating Earth as a developing-news story.
Earth, as covered by the Tremor's Earth Desk. A city afloat in cosmic wealth. The Editor has noted the architecture. The Editor has noted the silence around the architecture. The Editor has filed.
Femine-Fainting Weekly. Edited and proprieted by Mr D. Trumpet, a misogynist mouse. The publication performs feminine fragility as a politics. The Editor in Chief has had things to say. She has said them on record.
The Editor in Chief is, as a rule, not vocal. She makes one exception: Femine-Fainting Weekly, the publication run by Mr D. Trumpet. She holds it in undisguised disdain. The reason is editorial rather than personal. Femine-Fainting Weekly performs feminine fragility as a sales tactic. The Tremor refuses to.
Her position, as filed: "A magazine that monetises the suggestion that women might faint is not a magazine. It is a recruitment pamphlet for the people who would prefer they did."
The publication has not responded. Mr D. Trumpet has squeaked. The squeak is on file.
The Dopamine Machine™. Push for pleasure. Euphoria 100%. Bliss in capsule form. The Editor in Chief has noted the gauges. She has noted what is missing from them.
The Editor in Chief disapproves of the Dopamine Machine™. The disapproval is not moral. It is editorial. The machine sells digital dopamine hits, packaged as bliss, dispensed as pleasure, measured in euphoria. The Tremor has filed her position.
"The hits are real. The cost is the soul. The receipt is itemised in the body. The Tremor is on the side of the body."
The Editor in Chief does not require introduction. She requires only that the operatives file accurately, that the sources remain protected, and that the publication appear on schedule. She has not missed an issue. She does not intend to.
Distance for perspective. Sources for trust. Publication for record. The Tremor is on the desk by morning. The Editor has signed it off.
